Keeping your data safe: Why we’re moving beyond email and post

In a recent client survey, you told us that one of the things you love most about working with Francis Clark Financial Planning is that you trust us and feel you’re in safe hands. You also said it would be great to see the client portal improved to make communication and information sharing easier.

We value this feedback and want to continue delivering an exceptional client experience you can rely on.

As such, we take our responsibility to manage communications and protect your data extremely seriously.

Unfortunately, online fraud is a growing problem around the world. As technology advances, scammers are developing increasingly sophisticated methods that are harder to detect and prevent.

There are many types of fraud, such as pension scams and identity theft, but all are designed to deceive individuals or businesses into parting with their money or sensitive personal data.

That’s why cybersecurity, which defends digital systems and networks from unauthorised access and damage, is crucial.

Keep reading to find out why cybersecurity matters so much today and what we’re doing to keep your data safe.

Why cybersecurity matters now

Widespread concerns about cybersecurity have been fuelled by high-profile data breaches in recent years.

In April 2025, Marks & Spencer and the Co-op reported major cyberattacks that involved unauthorised access and theft of customer data including names, dates of birth and contact details. This data breach left customers more vulnerable to phishing scams and fraudulent impersonation.

Both companies experienced serious disruption to business, resulting in millions of pounds of lost revenue.

These attacks on household name brands are a stark reminder that cybersecurity risks are real and growing.

Indeed, a recent survey of UK adults by the Institution of Engineering and Technology has revealed that:

  • Three in four UK adults feel their data is not safe
  • 56% fear being hacked in the future
  • 74% believe hackers are becoming more inventive, with 67% saying they are harder to detect.

However, the research found that while awareness of cyber threats is growing, confidence and preparedness aren’t keeping pace.

Individuals need to remain vigilant, and businesses must put systems in place to safeguard against data breaches and cyberattacks.

Financial firms have an important responsibility to protect client data

Financial firms hold highly sensitive and valuable personal data, such as details about your income, investments, pensions, family circumstances and contact information.

That’s why maintaining secure communications and data storage systems is an essential part of what we do.

In a world where cybersecurity threats are increasing and consumers have higher privacy expectations, you need confidence that your financial information is being handled with care.

Working with Francis Clark Financial Planning provides valuable peace of mind as we are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which oversees financial services in the UK.

Part of the FCA’s role is to help firms become more resilient to cyberattacks. It requires firms to take responsibility for securing customer data and protect it from fraudsters.

Moreover, under the Consumer Duty (a set of FCA rules introduced in July 2023), all authorised firms are expected to put clients’ needs first and act in their best interests.

This gives you confidence that we are accountable and that your data is being managed in a regulated environment.

How our new client portal will strengthen cybersecurity at Francis Clark Financial Planning

Unfortunately, traditional ways of sharing information are often the most vulnerable. For example, email can be misdirected or intercepted and post can be lost, delayed or opened by someone else.

That’s why we’re developing a new approach to cybersecurity.

Later in the year, we’ll be launching a new client portal, which will be our primary communication channel with you.

It will reduce the risk of sensitive information being lost, intercepted or viewed by the wrong person. Here’s how:

  • The portal uses the same encryption standard as your bank
  • Only you will be able to access your information using a unique password
  • Easy to use WhatsApp-style messages are secure and logged, making them easier to track than email chains
  • Documents, portfolio values, meeting summaries and agreed actions are all stored in one secure place

The portal will improve both security and convenience by putting everything in one place – think of it as your financial plan in your pocket.
This dedicated app will be easy to access on your tablet or phone, similar to other apps you already use.

If you’re not confident using technology, don’t worry – we’ll be here to support you every step of the way. Keep an eye on your inbox for updates about the launch of your new client portal.
